The Case for Northern Michigan

Why BlueTech? Why Here?

Research is often the kernel of startups: the center that gets ideas forming and action moving. We believe that it’s a headwind for our startup ecosystem and regional economic development. Here in northwest Michigan, where we’re surrounded by the lakes, what could be more important than water?

Freshwater is more than the great lake views from our offices and highways; it’s a way of life.

We sit at the center of the Great Lakes, home to 21% of the world’s surface freshwater, with working waterways, real testing environments, and a growing cluster of researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who came here because the water matters to them. From startups tackling big freshwater challenges to companies working on saltwater solutions that would benefit from testing in freshwater to the under-construction Freshwater Research and Innovation Center, it’s a growing, and essential, part of our economy.

The Program

Introducing the Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator

The Northern Michigan BlueTech Accelerator is a seven-week program for early-stage freshwater and blue technology startups, facilitated in partnership with gener8tor. Founders receive structured curriculum, one-on-one coaching, and access to mentors, investors, and customers who understand the water sector. The program kicks off in-person in Traverse City in late August, with a Demo Day in October where all participants pitch to regional investors and partners.

Intensive Programming

Seven weeks of structured curriculum, facilitated by gener8tor. Programming is customized for the freshwater and blue technology sector, with mentors and advisors who understand your market.

Investor Access

All participants pitch at an in-person Demo Day in Traverse City in October. Selected companies have the opportunity to receive a significant investment award, with support continuing beyond Demo Day for companies that choose to put down roots in the region.

A Place to Build

The program is anchored in Traverse City, at 20Fathoms — Northern Michigan’s entrepreneurship hub. Companies that stay benefit from shared workspace, connections to the regional ecosystem, and access to the Freshwater Research & Innovation Center as it comes online in 2027.

INvestment

Potential post-program investment

Participating companies have the opportunity to be considered for $150k+ post-program investment following the showcase, though pursuing investment is entirely optional and not a requirement of the accelerator. Selected companies that are interested may be invited to continue growing their businesses as part of the Traverse City region’s emerging BlueTech ecosystem. Companies do not need to decide whether they wish to pursue funding prior to joining the program; those who do choose to explore this opportunity must be willing to establish a presence in the Traverse City region.
