Meet the Mentor: Jen Casey, Specializing in Sales, Advertising, and Marketing

By Keri Amlotte, Director of Marketing

At 20Fathoms, our team of industry experts serve as coaches and mentors to help our members grow their business and overcome challenges. This month, I’m talking to Jen Casey, President of Sales at Vortex Studios, and a 20Fathoms mentor.

How would you describe your background?

I have 20 years of experience in broadcast television and digital sales. While I’m originally from Traverse City, I spent years in New York and Chicago working for major media companies like ESPN, ABC, and Katz Media. I specialize in placing branding messages in front of the right audience at the right time. About five years ago, I moved back to Traverse City with my husband and now have two beautiful children. I am now President of Sales at Vortex Studios, a branded entertainment video production studio.

What is your role as a 20Fathoms mentor?

I help founders figure out how to maximize their marketing budget. Many times, startups are afraid to spend money on marketing, but it is critical to get the word out. You need to advertise your offerings to your target customer to get the word out and grow, but there are a lot of ways to do so that aren’t expensive.

When someone gets stuck in a rut and they do not know how best to spend their marketing dollars, I’m here to help.”

How can entrepreneurs benefit from working with a coach or mentor?

The 20Fathoms mentors provide expertise that you’d normally have to pay for. The mentors have been in this industry for a long time – they’ve found success and they’ve fumbled. The ability to consult with them is a great benefit. Why not tap into that?

Why did you decide to get involved with 20Fathoms?

I saw a presentation about 20Fathoms at a Rotary luncheon and immediately wanted to get involved. I think what 20Fathoms is doing in the region is phenomenal. Since then, I’ve been a 20Fathoms member, board member, and now I’m a mentor.

What do you like to do for fun in and around Traverse City?

I love to hike with my kids who are 2 and 3 years old. Our favorite spots are the Old Mission Lighthouse and Alligator Hill. I’m also a triathlete, so I spend a lot of time training.

20Fathoms mentors offer expertise in business strategy, sales, negotiation, human resources, recruiting, IT, marketing, business development, data analytics, business scaling, product strategy, investment strategy, finance, IP, company culture, and more. The mentorship program is flexible based on your needs – use it for a one-time coaching session or a long-term business relationship.
