No sweat – join a Business Model Kick-off or Startup Bootcamp to get started. \nMeet this week’s facilitator:\nBeth Melcher is the Founder of MoneyFit. Throughout her life\, she has been fascinated by language; English and French in college and in business school\, it was the language of finance. With 25 years of experience in commercial banking\, product management and small business financial consulting\, Beth has learned that companies have a unique language all of their own. Success happens when owners learn how to listen and respond to their companies—and Beth loves being the person to teach them how to do it. She has seen what success and failure look like. Most often\, the difference between one and the other is vision\, grit and a willingness to collaborate with trainers who can show you the way. Beth feels that the best part of her work is when she gets to be that trainer and see the spark between a company and its owner. When that partnership develops\, it forges a path toward true achievement. \nPresenting Partner:\n\n\n\nSupporting Partner:\n\n\n\nAbout 20Fathoms:\n20Fathoms is the home of entrepreneurship and innovation in Northwest Michigan. SUMMARY:Don't waste your money on patents: protecting your intellectual property
DESCRIPTION:Understand the difference between wasting your money and crafting your patents wisely\n\n\nWhat goes into a quality patent\, and where possible\, how do you get it without breaking the bank? Answering these questions will be the focus of our discussion. \nYou’ve put too much into your innovation to come up short when its life depends on the measure of your patent. In the eyes of the patent office\, judges\, juries\, PTAB admins\, ITC officials\, and IP-savvy investors\, it doesn’t really matter how great\, novel\, or universe-denting your invention is if it is not properly defined and protected by your patent. The difference between a good patent and a bad one is the difference between a valuable\, assertable\, defendable property right – and a worthless vanity plate. The quality that goes in up front is directly proportional to the leverage it will give you later when you need it most. \nThis event is hosted by 20Fathoms in partnership with Aurora Patents \nWhat you can expect to learn:\n\nThe importance of searching and avoiding public disclosure.\nStrategies for crafting patents with clear boundaries that utilize well-thought infringement vector design-around approaches to prevent competitors from easily pirating your invention.\nHow to balance quality and budget.\n\nEvent format:\nThis is an in-person event and there is no charge to attend. \nSpace is limited. Please register. \nLunch will be provided. \nWho should attend:\nIndividuals in management positions\, inventors\, and small- and medium-sized business owners \nAbout the presenter:\nDr. Ashley Sloat is a USPTO-registered patent practitioner who specializes in the development and management of patent portfolios for startup ventures and emerging growth companies. At Aurora Patents\, she takes a hands-on approach with each client\, partnering with Engineering and Management teams to intimately understand each client’s business\, competition\, and product vision. Armed with this knowledge\, Ashley is able to increase the value of her clients’ patent portfolios while reducing overall legal costs. \n\n\nAbout 20Fathoms\n20Fathoms is the home of technology and entrepreneurship in Northern Michigan. We catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship through startup incubation services\, business workshops\, community partnership\, and a vibrant coworking space. We also remove barriers and accelerate career growth through tech career training\, talent acquisition\, and the advancement of regional strategic initiatives.
