SUMMARY:BlueTech Innovation Challenge\, culminating during NMSW
DESCRIPTION:Go from learning to startup launch\n\n\nEver wanted to build a startup — or sharpen how you build one — but weren’t sure where to begin? \nThe Innovation Challenge is a hands-on\, multi-session startup program where participants work in teams to tackle real-world BlueTech and water challenges and turn them into pitch-ready solutions. \nThe program builds over several weeks of guided pre-sessions and culminates during Northern Michigan Startup Week\, when teams take the stage at TCNewTech to present what they’ve built. \n📍 Locations:Pre-sessions at 20Fathoms or virtualSprint at NMC Innovation Center (Room 106/107) \n🗓 Program Commitment:Participants are expected to attend the full program\, including: \nPre-Sessions (in-person at 20Fathoms or virtual):• Friday\, April 10 (1:00 – 3:00 PM): ideation + the art of innovation• Friday\, April 17 (1:00 – 3:00 PM): storytelling + pitching \nInnovation Challenge Sprint (at NMC Innovation Center):• Monday\, April 20 (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM)• Tuesday\, April 21 (8:30 AM – 8:00 PM\, including TCNewTech pitch competition) \n🥐 Breakfast & Lunch Provided During the Challenge (April 20 and 21) \nSpace is limited\, and participants are expected to commit to the full program. \nThis program is designed for people who want to actively build and experiment\, including: \n\nEstablished entrepreneurs looking to apply their skills to new industries or meaningful community challenges\nPeople exploring how to start a company and wanting a structured\, hands-on experience\nStudents curious about entrepreneurship and innovation\nTechnologists and developers eager to build and experiment\nOperators\, creatives\, and problem-solvers who thrive in collaborative environments\n\nWhether you’ve built companies before or are just beginning to explore what startup life looks like\, this experience meets you where you are. \nStep 1: Prepare with Pre-Sessions \nBefore the Challenge officially kicks off\, participants will take part in a series of in-person or virtual pre-sprint learning sessions designed to set you up for success. These sessions will cover topics like an introduction to water-focused innovation\, how startups are formed and validated\, and how to develop and pitch strong ideas. \nYou don’t need to be a water expert or a seasoned founder — we’ll help you get grounded so you can hit the ground running. \nStep 2: Hear the Challenges \nInstead of entrepreneurs pitching their ideas\, local nonprofits working on water-related challenges will pitch real problems they’re facing. These are tangible\, community-rooted issues — and your team will work on building creative\, viable solutions. \nStep 3: Build the Solution \nOver two fast-paced days at the NMC Innovation Center\, you’ll: \n\nForm interdisciplinary teams\nSelect a challenge\nDevelop a solution with support from Blue Tech subject matter experts and experienced entrepreneurs\nRefine your concept into a compelling pitch\n\nBreakfast and lunch will be provided to keep you fueled and focused. \nStep 4: Take the Stage \nThe Challenge culminates live on stage at TCNewTech\, where teams will pitch their brand-new ideas to judges and a live audience. \n\nCash awards will go directly to the winning team and the nonprofit whose problem inspired the solution.\nThe winning team will also receive a startup support package from 20Fathoms should they decide to pursue their solution — or any future startup idea they’re ready to build.\n\nWhether you’re a student curious about entrepreneurship\, a founder looking to apply your skills to meaningful challenges\, or someone who simply wants to learn how startups are built — this is an immersive crash course in innovation. \nThis is more than a hackathon. It’s hands-on startup education. It’s community-driven innovation. \nCome curious. Leave capable. \nBreakfast and lunch provided to participants during the sprint. \nAbout 20Fathoms \nBased in Traverse City\, 20Fathoms is a nonprofit organization and the hub for entrepreneurship and innovation in Northwest Michigan. SUMMARY:TCNewTech: Innovation Challenge Special Edition during NMSW
DESCRIPTION:A special edition of TCNewTech: brand-new ideas from our Innovation Competition take the stage for live audience voting\n\n\nThis isn’t your average TCNewTech. \nThis is the grand finale of our Reverse Pitch & Innovation Challenge. But wait\, what’s a Reverse Pitch? \nInstead of founders pitching polished startups\, local nonprofits pitch real-world challenges — particularly in the Blue Tech and water innovation space. Over the course of a fast-paced\, multi-day sprint at the NMC Innovation Center\, teams of entrepreneurs\, students\, creatives\, and subject matter experts form around those challenges and build brand-new solutions from scratch. \nAt this special edition of TCNewTech\, those teams will take the stage to pitch ideas that are: \n\nRadically innovative\nFreshly built and barely pressure-tested\nBig\, bold\, and potentially startup-worthy\n\nYou’ll see early-stage thinking in its most electric form — the kind of ideas that might just become the next company launched in Northern Michigan. \nThe Main Stage \nEach team will have 5 minutes to pitch their solution\, with audience Q&A to follow. Then YOU get to choose which idea will win. \n· Cash awards will go to the winning team and the nonprofit whose challenge inspired the solution. \n· The winning team will also receive a startup support package from 20Fathoms should they decide to pursue their idea — or any startup idea they’re ready to build next. \nExpect high energy\, a few surprises\, and special presentations woven throughout the evening. \nThe Expo + Networking \nBefore the show (4:30 – 5:30 pm) and after the competition\, explore our Expo in the lobby featuring the best of our regional innovation ecosystem — startups\, support organizations\, community partners\, and opportunities to plug in. \nWhether you’re: \n\nAn entrepreneur looking for your next idea\nA student exploring what startup life could look like\nA creative thinker who loves big concepts\nOr simply startup-curious\n\nYou’ll leave inspired — and maybe even plotting your own venture. \nCash bar available. Light snacks will be served. Afterparty to follow. \nEvent Schedule \n4:30 – 5:30 pm: Doors open + Expo in the lobby\n5:30 – 7:00 pm: Innovation Challenge Special Edition Competition\n7:00 – 8:00 pm: Networking\n8:00 pm – ?: Afterparty \n20Fathoms plans to take photos and video during this event. By attending\, you agree to being photographed and filmed for marketing purposes. \nPresenting Partner:\n\n\n\nSupporting Partners:\n\n\n\n\nAbout TCNewTech \nA program of 20Fathoms\, TCNewTech is a recurring pitch competition supported by tech enthusiasts\, businesses\, and entrepreneurs. SUMMARY:A Founder's Relationship to Feedback\, a 20Fathoms Breakfast Lab
DESCRIPTION:This Week at Breakfast Lab\nFeedback can either fuel your progress… or completely shut you down. In this session\, we’re working on making it the first one. \nTogether\, we’ll explore what actually makes feedback useful (and what makes it spiral)\, how to ask for the kind of input you actually need\, and how to give feedback in a way that builds trust\, not tension. Using Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process© as a guide\, you’ll get a simple\, structured approach to navigating feedback conversations with more clarity and less ego. \nWe’ll walk through the framework\, practice it together\, and help you build a tool you can take into one-on-ones\, team conversations\, and customer interactions. Expect to laugh a little\, learn a lot\, and leave feeling more confident (and maybe even excited) to get feedback and get back to work. \nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna Beard is a thoughtful facilitator who brings a community-centered approach to communication\, collaboration\, and creative work. She is passionate about helping individuals and teams build trust through better feedback\, making space for honest conversations that actually move ideas forward. \nWith a focus on practical tools and real-world application\, Anna creates environments where people feel supported to share\, reflect\, and grow. Her sessions are engaging\, approachable\, and designed to help participants walk away with something they can use right away. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Breakfast Lab\n\n\n\nBreakfast Lab is a weekly event at 20Fathoms where you’ll get expert guidance to help meet your most pressing startup needs\, providing access to the right tools and the right people at the right time. \nThese events are held in person and will be offered virtually. There is no cost to attend. Coffee and a light breakfast are provided. Walk-ins are welcome. \nAnd if you’d like to stay and keep working\, coworking at 20Fathoms is free on Thursdays for Breakfast Lab attendees.
